“Welcome to the Desert of the Real” is the text from which Slavoj Zizek read from on November 14, 2001 in his lecture, “Passions of the Real: Violence In The XXth Century” at Jack Tilton Gallery in NYC. It is, in general, Zizek’s reflections on the destruction of the WTC and his perception of the reactions from both the Right and the Left, from his Leftist perspective. From this vantage, he attempts to find the source of these Western “First World” reactions, while probing the initial US reaction within the psychological framework of American film, television and journalistic media.

The day started at 10:00 am.

 At Carasana offices we were introduced to the team that works there. After a theoretical input we saw some examples of the work made by Carasana. (“The Beauty and the Waste”, about recycling. “Picked-up”, a movie sponsored by the Levi Strauss Foundation, whose main subject is the AIDS prevention among the African population living in Germany as another one who deals with the same subject among the Gay Community.

After lunch we started using video cameras  and being acquainted with art-work and light.

In the evening we went dinner in an old town brewery! (The horse meat was fantastic )

Marshall McLuhan

McLuhan claimed in Understanding Media that all media have characteristics that engage the viewer in different ways; for instance, a passage in a book could be reread at will, but a movie had to be screened again in its entirety to study any individual part of it. So the medium through which a person encounters a particular piece of content would have an effect on the individual’s understanding of it. Some media, like movies, enhance one single sense, in this case vision, in such a manner that a person does not need to exert much effort in filling in the details of a movie image. McLuhan contrasted this with TV, which he claimed requires more effort on the part of viewer to determine meaning, and comics, which due to their minimal presentation of visual detail require a high degree of effort to fill in details that the cartoonist may have intended to portray. A movie is thus said by McLuhan to be “hot” (intensifying one single sense) and “high definition” (demanding a viewer’s attention), and a comic book to be “cool” and “low definition” (requiring much more conscious participation by the reader to extract value). This concentration on the medium and how it conveys information — rather than on the specific content of the information — is the focal point of “the medium is the message.”

The goal of the course was to conceptualize and create a series of short videos documents using the city of Oporto as the subject.

Participants drew inspiration from the “City Symphony” documentaries of the silent film era.

Each group produced a short video and created an interactive dvd.

D.O.C  focus in the “elective affinity” between the Oporto city, the river and the wine.

FULL DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING CONTENTS 

Preparation: Reflection on personal experiences in media education, finding ideas about goals and objectives of movies in education. 

Objectives: The participants should obtain technical skills to produce own movies with free software. They should be enabled to implement own movie courses with students in adult and school education. Further on they will receive knowledge about didactics of media education.

Methodology: Basic concepts of media education will be taught by lectures, within group work and practical sessions. The main part will be learning by doing in teamwork, e.g. producing own movies. The results will be presented to all participants, followed by discussion and evaluation. 

Follow-up: The produced material and the papers offered to the participants will be published on the internet. This will allow the participants to organise own training courses.
